SLB has often raised the bar with his every film, be it Hum Dil De Chuke, Bajirao Mastani, or now Heeramandi. But there was a time when Bhansali thought he could never make Bajirao Mastani due to the ugly breakup between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan. The ex-couple was supposed to be the lead in Bhansali’s film, but their separation made Aishwarya choose to walk out of the film as she clearly stated she did not want to work with Salman Khan ever again in her life.

Bhansali recalled and said: “I was very hurt by the fact that Aishwarya was not being Mastani. For me, she is a central part of my work. So is my friendship with Salman. I was in a dilemma; I wanted to stand by her, too. We didn’t meet in the middle for one and a half years because she felt I was not a good enough friend to visit her in the hospital. But I wanted her to go home and rest, but I think in friendship, you should be able to express the fact that you are hurt.”

There was a time when SLB had reportedly revealed about Salman Khan asking to cast Katrina Kaif as his Mastani, but he felt she didn’t fit the role.
